A therapist is someone with whom you can discuss your mental health issues or whatever might be currently weighing you down and causing you distress. Seeking therapy is not a sign of weakness, but rather, is important to be able to provide you the tailored help that you need so you can get back on track1. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to have hit rock bottom or have an already diagnosed mental health disorder to seek therapeutic services2. Those who are troubled by something now or needing guidance in a certain area of their life, such as with self-esteem or relationship difficulties, may also benefit from speaking with a therapist.

Some signs that may indicate it would be a good idea to speak with a therapist include the following:

• Experiencing repeated emotional problems that are interfering with your day-to-day life

• Feeling frequently anxious

• Experiencing a general feeling of overwhelm

• Getting angry more easily or struggling to regulate your emotions

• Avoiding socializing with others

• Using substances such as drugs and alcohol to help you get through the day

• Having thoughts of harming yourself or feeling like you do not want to be here anymore (if this is the case, it is recommended that you also contact a suicide hotline, such as the 9-8-8 line in Canada, or call 911 if you are in danger)

• Experiencing changes in sleep or appetite

• Having experienced trauma

• Wanting to improve yourself, but not knowing where to start1,2

Such symptoms can be indicative of an existing mental health issue or may have started for no clear reason1. They could also be in response to a stressful or traumatic event that is now manifesting in its impact on how you are feeling and coping in everyday life.

Speaking with a therapist may help to address these concerns, help you achieve your goals, and lead to improvements in many areas of your life3. Not only may therapy help you learn effective coping skills, but research shows that the coping skills one learns in therapy often remain once therapy has ended. You can learn to manage your symptoms and take control of your life so that you are able to flourish and thrive. Beginning your therapeutic journey doesn’t have to be scary. At Mantra Psychotherapy, we encourage you to find a therapist that best fits your needs and that you feel most comfortable with when embarking on this important journey towards mental wellness.
